Lunch with Lovers with Lindsay Downs

Hey all!  In another installment of my feature, Lunch with Lovers, I am thrilled to have on the bloggy today, Regency and Mystery Author Lindsay Downs.  A wonderful friend and prolific writer, Lindsay had a chance to chat with two characters from the recently released The Masked Lady and the Murder (A Markson Regency Mystery) at a recent time-traveling sit-down.  What? You'll understand soon.  *grin*  Enjoy!

Character interview for Samantha Combs

Samantha, thank you for allowing me to stop by with an interview I’ve had with one of my characters. I’d planned on talking with Jessica Sales but unfortunately she’s currently in a hospital in southern France in critical condition.

So, with her unavailable I queried Lord and Lady Markson if I might impose on their valuable time. The only problem, well for me at least, is I’ve got to travel back in time to 1814 London. As an author of regency romantic mysteries nothing’s impossible, I hope. If you’ll give me a few minute I need to change into appropriate attire so I may call on the Viscount and Viscountess of Hampshire.

Now properly dressed in a deep blue jacket over a cream coloured linen shirt with a cravat tied to perfection I felt ready. My valet had also suggested buckskin britches tucked into polished well-worn riding boots to set the proper image of a country gentleman to which I agreed. Then again, as a regency author I knew what to wear but this was the first time I had to dress the part.

With a deep, calming breath I climbed the marble stairs leading to the most impressive polished oak door I’d ever seen, let alone written. With a kid gloved hand I raised the solid brass knocker and let it fall against its plate and waited. Within moments an elderly, but familiar man swung the door open.

“Bing, is it. I’m Mr. Lindsay Downs. I’ve an appointment with Lord and Lady Markson.”

“Yes, please come in,” he said as I watched him swing to door wide and step aside so I can enter.
With a nod I stepped into the massive marble floored entranceway.

“Sir, as I was informed you’re interrogating them as what how they solved the murders of the late viscount and Lord Markson’s older brother.”

“Yes. As I understand it there were several interesting events which happened during the investigation and wish my readers to learn more about them,” I replied, handing over my gloves and great coat, for London can be a bit chilly in late fall.

“Sir, won’t your reader learn about them by reading the book, The Masked Lady and The Murder.
Don’t you think they’d like to learn more about what you didn’t write, meaning no disrespect.”

Mid-stride I halted, pondering his words only to realize he might be correct.

“Bing, if I understand you correctly you’re suggesting I speak with you, Evan, Mrs Stoneworth and Amanda.”

“Yes sir. For example, do you know why Evan showed up in Hyde Park right after m’ lord was shot? Or how Mrs Stoneworth was able to get her sister ensconced as housekeeper in Mr Markson’s house in India. Or how I knew the Well’s butler would aid in protecting m’ lord and m’ lady?”

“And why Evan and Amanda weren’t caught kissing but she did present evidence of such an event when they found Lord and Lady Markson in an embrace before marriage vows were exchanged?”

Stay tuned for more of this interesting and unique interview!

How to Get a 6-Book Contract

I have a wonderful bestie I met on Facebook.  Lindsay Downs was a writer just getting started when I first began networking on FB.  She was the first one to befriend me, then the first one to chat with me.  We have been best friends ever since, pushing each other along in our writing journey, celebrating each other's successes and always being there for one another.  Today, Lindsay is a best-selling regency romance author, her stories and novellas are tighter and more entertaining than ever, and it seems I am not the only one to notice.

Lindsay just announced the sale of a six-book series and a contract to match, from Secret Cravings Publishing.

I didn't even have to prod her to know there was no "magic formula" for this to happen.  Lindsay has been working her craft for the past two years and working on it hard.  She takes advantage of all the writing prompts, and writer's groups she can handle and endlessly edits, massages, and critiques her manuscripts.  I asked Lindsay to share the journey with us to the big contract and she agreed.  May I welcome my wonderful friend, the author Lindsay Downs.

From Point A to a 6 Book Contract by Lindsay Downs

A little over a year ago I joined a small group of published and unpublished writer call Tuesday Tales. Here we would write a scene based on a specific word prompt.  At about this same time I was developing an idea for a new series, as yet untitled. One week the word prompt was “save”. Unlike previous books I hadn’t come up with a name for the heroine so I referred to her as Ice Queen, which became the title of the first story. As it developed I was able to come up with her name, Jessica Sales. And before you ask, don’t, it’s a long story how I found the name.

Anyways, as the weeks progressed I continued writing the book, scene by scene and all based on the word prompt for that week. Creating a book this way was/is not only different, a challenge but interesting and makes you, the writer think outside the box.

With the prompts posted in the Tuesday Tales Facebook group in advance I was able to look ahead. So in June of last year I started the next book having found the logical ending to Ice Queen and beginning to Red Queen. This book progressed in the same manner of the first.

What I did find interesting, I got a few feelers about the series from a publisher. You see, as I was creating the books, I didn’t know what to do with them, self-publish or search out a publisher. I decided to take the plunge and polished the books then wrote synopsis’ for four more books.
In December I submitted the two completed books along with the story line for four more to Secret Craving Publishing. Three weeks to the day after sending them off I awoke to find a contract in my email in-box for the entire six (6) book series. Three will be released this year and the others in 2014.

I should point out, during the time I was working on the Tuesday Tales scenes for both Ice Queen and Red Queen I was also writing and editing two books in the Emily Dahill, CID series. I also broke from the contemporary genre and wrote my bestselling regency, A Christmas Surprise, released by Astraea Press in November. I also sold and went through the edits for Love and War, a trilogy of romantic war stories, which was released by Secret Cravings Publishing in December.
I know this is a lot to take in but remember I’ve been writing since 2006 with my first contract in 2008 and the book was released in 2009. I’ve been working on the craft while developing my voice to create books which readers and publishers want.

The key is never to give up. Take workshops, attend conferences, read books, not on writing, for pleasure. Someday you might get an author’s dream of a multi-book contract and/or a best seller.

If I hear one more debutante declare that they will never marry unless it is for love, well. I shall break my quill! And we all know what happens when I break my quill. Things become very upsetting and it isn’t long before I--- Well, that is quite another story. Let this author, this matriarch, this paragon of society guide you with her infinite wisdom. It is apparent that many of you have gotten this silly notion of love in your head, most likely from American influence, and please do not get me started on those savages. The point, young dears, is that love, is silly. Take for example Lady Aleece, poor young dear never stood a chance! Can you imagine being mauled in public? By a commoner no less? Although, rumors have been running rampant that this very delicious commoner is in fact the Marquess of Somerset, I have my doubts. For one thing, a Marquess should be more unfortunate looking which is clearly not the case with Somerset. Let this be a lesson dear readers. If you marry for love, there is a very big chance that you will end up with your heart broken, or in that wretched commoners case—kidnapped (though many believe he should have been killed for even breathing the same air as our fair lady). Jumping Genres

I asked my dear, sweet, wonderful FB friend Lindsay Downs to address something I always do, and she just started doing...jumping genres.  I write YA paranormal and adult horror and she used to be faithful to the suspense genre.  Now, she writes, of all things, regency (which is my own idea of horror).  So I asked Lindsay to write me a post about why.  Thanks Lindsay!

Jumping Genres by Lindsay Downs

Most of you know me as an author of contemporary mystery with my Emily Dahill Series from Astraea Press.
Well, it would seem that I’ve dived head first into a totally different genre, one that I had always said I’d never venture into. Read yes. Write no.

Oops, I guess I should never say never as not only do I have one from this genre out but am working on its sequel with at least two more waiting in the wings.
I’m talking about regency. Yes, regency with all its rules and demands on the author to get everything correct.
Now you might ask, why would I, who swore they’d never write one, sit down and create a Top 100, Amazon, book.

I did it for the challenge with no idea if I could even get past the first few pages. However, once I started writing the book it was impossible for me to stop.
The result is a novella, A Christmas Surprise, which has garnered rave reviews and ranks in the top 100 in several regency and historical categories.

One interesting thing you’ll find with this book, I follow the style you’ll find in the Emily Dahill series. In that the heroine is the primary character who resolves the crisis.

The Kid Interview Series #6 - Lindsay Downs is interviewed by her 4 year old collie (Yes, it's a dog. All kids aren't human you know)

Probably the first and now best friend I have made since coming onto Facebook has been my fellow Astraea Press author, Lindsay Downs.  Lindsay's writing style is completely unlike ANYTHING I have seen or likely ever will see among my author friends.  You see, Lindsay writes suspense and military thrillers where the hero is a dog.  A collie, to be exact.  Dakota and I have become great friends over the past year or so.  He knows and enjoys my books and he tolerates his Mom's obsession for writing.
When he heard I was doing a series of kid interviews, he was right there, panting, if you will, to be a part of it.  So, Lindsay asked the questions, and knowing Dakota like she does, translated the answers to me.  Please enjoy the question-and-answer ramblings of my favorite collie's mind.

THE KID’S INTERVIEW

Dakota, age 4, interviews his author mom, Lindsay

Q.      Can you name all your Mom’s books?
Dakota:  Yes. Emily Dahill, CID Part 1, A Dog Gone Christmas, A Body in the Attic, Emily Dahill, CID Part 2 and A Collie Rescue.
Q.      Which is your favorite and why?
Dakota:  It’s really hard to say which is my favorite as each book has some great scenes in them. Thinking about it though I’d really have to say A Collie Rescue is far and above the best. This book features a homeless vet and the heroine and her struggle to live day to day.
Q.      When does your Mom write?  Where in the house?  Describe her writing area.
Dakota:  She writes in both the afternoon and evening. She’s got a desk near the living room so she can watch TV while writing. Her writing area, a total mess. Papers all over the desk and behind her is a white board where she writes notes about one or more of her WIP’s.
Q.      What are you doing when Mom is writing?
Dakota:  I usually sleep.
Q.      If Mom got rich and famous, what would you want her to do with the money?
Dakota:  Let’s wait and see when that happens because what I’d want now I might not want when she is.
Q.      Do you read your Mom’s books?
Dakota:  I don’t know how to read
Q.      Do you think you do better in school because Mom is a writer?
Dakota:  I don’t go to school
Q.      Do your friends know what your Mom writes?  Do you tell them?
Dakota:  Well my half-bro, Sparkie the cat, does but that’s about it.
Q.      Do you want to be a writer when you grow up?  If not, what do you want to be.
Dakota:  No, I’m happy being a collie thank you.
Q .   If you could dedicate a book to your Mom, what would you say?
Dakota:  To the world’s best Mom.

Lindsay has a new release coming up for the Christmas season, this recent cover heralding a new Emily Dahill book, and is busy working on two other manuscripts starring the irrepressible Dakota.  Make contact and find out what's coming soon!

My Personal Path To Publication - Lindsay Downs

My guest today is a fellow author at Astraea Press and an author of mystery/suspense novels as well as romance.  There has also been a brief dabble into YA (at my request) but Lindsay is first and foremost a writer and lover of a good mystery.  The next offering you can expect has a most unusual protagonist, a collie named Dakota, who is a partner of the other protagonist, Emily Dahill, CID, the lead character as well as the title of the book.  I don't get lucky enough to interview Dakota here, but I reserved the right with Lindsay to get her in the future.  Here now, enjoy Lindsay's journey:

    1. How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing with an eye toward being published since 2006 when I joined Romance Writers of America (RWA). Before then I did a newsletter which was part fiction, part non-fiction, depending on the stories I could find. I’ve also written for a weekly newspaper. In total I’ve been writing since the mid 80’s. 1980’s that is.

    2. Are you published and if so, how long have you been a published author? If not, what’s your
    plan?
Besides Astraea Press I have stories with two other presses. The Wild Rose Press gave me my first contract in 2008 for a historical romance. I’m also published with another press, who will remain unnamed. I have a romance also through them. Even though I have two romance stories out in cyber land I’m much happier writing mystery/suspense.

    3. Which route did you choose for becoming published, the traditional route, with an agent, the
“indie” route, going directly to the publishers yourself, or deciding to self-publish?
I’ve pitched to both agent and editors at conferences. To date I’ve only had one story sold that way, Somewhere in North Africa and that was to The Wild Rose Press. So, I guess you could say I went the ‘indie’ route and am glad, correction ecstatic, to have found Stephanie Taylor at Astraea Press. I did try putting out a book via the self-publishing route but decided to pull the book due to bad reviews. I’m planning to rewrite that story and then submit it to publishers.

    4. Why did you choose that particular route?
I chose to go the small press route because I feel there is so much more hands on with them. You develop a relationship with the staff and are given personal attention. You’re not lost in the crowd of other authors.

    5. How long did it take you to write your first novel?
That’s really a tough question to answer. My first story, a short, that I was contracted for probably took about six months. This was back when I was starting out and learning how to write. Which, I must add, I still am to this day.

    6. How long did it take you to publish it?
I pitched the short at a conference when after getting rejected on the spot for a full. The editor asked if I had anything else and when I told her I had a WWII historical I gave her the unprepared pitch and sold the story.

    7. How many times did it get rejected before it got published?
As you can see from above it never got rejected. However, the full I wrote several years later has been rejected with every publisher and agent I submitted the story to. That’s the major reason for rewriting the book. A few of the rejections gave me suggestions on how to improve the story and I’ll be implementing them in the rewrite.

    8. Tell us about worst rejection letter.
All rejection letters are bad. I can’t, even though I have them all, pinpoint any one in specific as being worse than the others. Rejection letters are all part of the writing process and if you take them personally then maybe this isn’t the right job for you.

    9. What was the best news you ever got in your writing life and how did it make you feel?
The best news wasn’t so much my first contract but the latest one with Astraea Press. How did it make me feel-like I finally made it. Here was a new press that had the same faith in me and my characters, Emily Dahill, CID and her very unusual partner, Dakota, as I did.

    10.         What’s the worst piece of advice you ever got?
Whatever it was I forgot what it was or took it and reversed the advice into good and applied it to my writing.

    11.         Now, tell us the best!
Write what you know. And it wasn’t necessarily romance but military. Since then I’ve focused on having some or all my characters in the Army. That’s how I ended up with mystery today.

    12.  What’s the one thing you would want an aspiring writer to take away from your personal
    path to publication?
Learn the craft, which is an ongoing process. Develop your own voice. And have faith in you, your writing and your characters.

    13.  Where can we read your blog? Buy your books? Connect with you on Facebook? On
    Twitter? Your website?
    Twitter: ldowns2966

Back cover blurbs for Emily Dahill, CID Part 1
Final Mission-After being seriously wounded in a copter crash in Iraq Sgt. Emily Dahill meets her new partner as she embarks on her new Army career as a CID agent. Who could this new partner be?
A Body in the Snow-Emily and her partner, Dakota, cross bullets with their most determined foe. Who will survive?
Right Place, Wrong Day-On leave to hang with friends Emily gets the surprise of her life.
Dog on Fishing-When it comes to knowing how to fish, and catch the big ones, never underestimate your partner. He might surprise you.

Exciting, right?  I know I can't wait to read this and the rest in the series.  I happen to know there are more and Lindsay is readying them for release as we speak.  Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the rest in the series.  And the next time you see a beautiful collie, think of Dakota.  Somewhere, somehow, an attractive detective is relying on a surefooted canine for a partner.  And she always gets her man!
